Title: Westphalia Reverie
Comments: One of the things I love about Texas is the fusion of great ethnic traditions, the open-hearted landscape that allows Mexicans and Germans and Blacks and Irishmen and Czechs to co-exist so exuberantly and yet so mindfully of their unique traditions. The beautiful Church of the Visitation in Westphalia, 126 years old, is a stunning example of the Czech influence on Texas. When you stand in it you think "how is it that this enormous structure, this hallowed place of worship, was built out here on the blacklands without the help of cranes and bulldozers and fabricated steel?" I am told that it was once the largest wooden structure west of the Mississippi. I believe it.
