Title: In Memory of Weldon Kees
Comments: I spoke to a Skellytown resident and asked if anybody famous had ever been locked up in this jail. She told me that the poet Weldon Keys had once spent the night there. Nobody remembers why, she said, but it "may have had something to do with a horse or a whore."
So I wondered who Weldon Kees was. Wikipedia had the answer. Kees was born in Beatrice, Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska, earning his degree in 1935. In addition to writing, Kees was passionate about painting and throughout his life created many forms of art including experimental films. In 1955 Kees took his sleeping bag and his savings account book and disappeared, leaving his car on the Golden Gate Bridge. He may have killed himself or he may have gone to Mexico, which he had spoken about doing many times. Nobody knows.
